•selenium sulfide is the active ingredient in several pharmaceutical & cosmetic products, including prescription drug for treatment of dandruff & non-prescription dandruff shampoo .
•preparations: lotion shampoo, 1% and 2.5%.
•a dandruff shampoo containing 1 percent selenium sulfide is available without prescription and is recommended for use once or twice a week. by prescription, a shampoo or lotion containing 2.5 percent selenium sulfide is available, with the recommended application limited to ten minutes for seven days to avoid the possibility of acute toxic effects. also, a 2.5 percent aqueous suspension of the chemical is approved for marketing by prescription for treatment of tinea versicolor fungal infection (fda communication). additionally, selenium sulfide is used topically in veterinary medicine for eczemas and dermatomycoses.
