Potassium Permanganate
Odor: characteristic Use: When potassium permanganate is added to water, it dissolves and turns into a pink or purple solution. The evaporation then turns the solution into darker colored crystals. The crystals or granules have a metallic sheen and are usually dark purple or dark bronze. Despite the noticeable color, the granules are odorless and have a sweet, astringent taste. |

permanganic acid (hmno4), potassium salt. a highly oxidative, water-soluble compound with purple crystals, and a sweet taste. (from mcgraw-hill dictionary of scientific and technical information, 4th ed) Bleaching agent for food starch
Potassium permanganate is the inorganic chemical compound KMnO4, a water soluble salt consisting of equal mole amounts of potassium (K+) and permanganate (MnO4-, officially called manganate (VII) ) ions. This salt, formerly known as permanganate of potash or Condy's crystals is a strong oxidizing agent. It dissolves in water to give deep purple solutions, evaporation of which gives prismatic purplish-black glistening crystals. In 2000, worldwide production was estimated at 30 000 tonnes. In this compound, manganese is in the +7 oxidation state.; Solid KMnO4 is a strong oxidizer and thus should be kept separated from oxidizable substances. Reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid produces the highly explosive manganese(VII) oxide (Mn2O7). When solid KMnO4 is mixed with pure glycerol it will result in a violent combustion reaction.
